Sometimes it feels like you should do anything you possibly can to try to keep your classes orderly. Generally speaking this is true. However, there is one area that you should never go into when it comes to classroom management--grades.
Grades should be a reflection of knowledge and performance, not behavior.
Using grades to motivate good behavior is a cop out. It is not something that good teachers do. And don't try to cook up some phantom "participation" grade that is really just a thin disguise for grading behavior. Ugh.
Let grades come from student performance. Figure out another way to handle discipline.
Your students will be the ones who benefit.
